The blaze was reported at 1:16 p.m. at 264 Frederick St. The fire started in the rear portion of a three-story apartment building, fire department spokeswoman Lt. Mindy Talmadge said.

The windy night posed challenges for firefighters but they were able to keep the blaze from spreading beyond the three buildings, she said.

Crews controlled the fire in about 30 minutes, Talmadge said. It caused an estimated $800,000 in structural damage, and about $300,000 in damage to the buildings' contents, according to initial estimates.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Talmadge said.
