San Mateo Police Sergeant Dave Peruzzaro was given the Public Safety Medal of Valor. He was the officer who reached though the window of a San Mateo home and grabbed a 1 and 3-year-old from their mother's arms, during a shootout between police and a gunman.

As he grabbed the 3-year-old, the gunman opened fire hitting the children's mother.

Peruzzaro was also hit by shrapnel, but managed to shield the child from the gunfire.

He has worked for the San Mateo Police Department for 13 years.

Officers Bryan Paul and Joe Romeo of the Los Gatos/Monte Sereno Police Department and Officer Roger Smith of the California Highway Patrol were also honored.
