Federal regulators recommend using a tanning bed no more than three times in the first week.

However, when FDA researchers posing as 15-year-old girls phoned thousands of salons, they say 89 percent of the salons told them they could use tanning beds six to seven times a week -- twice the recommended limit. Researchers say high usage is an invitation to skin cancer.

The Indoor Tanning Association disputed the survey's claims and said the duration of a tanning session is more important than the frequency.
