The boy suffered head trauma when he struck the windshield and got abrasions on his arms and hands. He was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, traffic Officer Ron Klein said. His name was not released.

Klein said the incident happened around 8 a.m. on Ely Boulevard South at Spoonbill Avenue.

The student was crossing Ely Boulevard South in the crosswalk south of Spoonbill Avenue and the vehicle was traveling south on Ely Boulevard South, Klein said.

A witness said the teen was riding his skateboard in the crosswalk toward the high school when he was struck, Klein said.

The driver of the vehicle did not appear to be speeding and said he had slowed for several students walking through the crosswalk when he began driving forward, Klein said.

The driver said he didn't see the teen on the skateboard until it was too late to stop and that the sun was shining in his eyes, Klein said.

The incident is under investigation and witnesses are asked to call Klein at (707) 776-3721.
