Brian Vargas had arrived at the park with his parents, two siblings and another family shortly before 3:30 p.m. and immediately ran into the water, East Bay Regional Park District police Lt. Jon King said.

Moments later, lifeguards spotted the boy floating face down in the water.

He was not breathing and had no pulse when lifeguards brought him on shore and began administering CPR, police said.

When paramedics arrived, they took over CPR and then transported the boy to Sutter Delta Medical Center in Antioch. He was later flown to Children's Hospital Oakland, where died Friday evening.
