Mayor Gavin Newsom helped launch the Melbourne tram into the F-Market line.
The green and cream-colored tram was built in 1946. It is the second Melbourne streetcar to become part of the special route. San Francisco revived its historic line in 1995.
It is popular with tourists and commuters and carries 18,000 passengers a day.
