In some cases, women say insurers tried to coerce them not to have children.

Peggy Robertson says Golden Rule insurance denied her coverage because of a C-section she had and would agree to cover her under one condition.

Robertson said she was told by the company, "If you would like to get sterilized we would be happy to cover you."

A reporter asked her "They actually suggested that you get sterilized?"

And Robertson replied, "Yes, in a written letter."

"I'm not going to say anything, but we need to change that. Anything less than that would be unsatisfactory to anyone listening," said Karen Ignagni, an industry spokesperson.

Golden Rule insurance company says it now covers women who have had C-sections, but they do have to pay more.

California is one of 11 states that forbids states from basing premiums on gender.
