The district's fire communications center received reports of a fire at about 3 a.m., according to police. Police and fire units arrived at the fire to find a 49-year-old man from the Rodeo area lying nearby, critically injured.

The man apparently climbed a Pacific Gas and Electric Co. power pole to steal copper wiring, according to Sgt. Tyrone Davis. He cut a live power line by accident, he said. The line sparked as it hit the ground, igniting nearby brush.

Davis said PG&E told him of a similar case in the area last week.

The man was transported to UC Davis Medical Center for treatment. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact the East Bay Regional Park Police Department at (510) 881-1833.
