Firefighters responded to a home at 62 Valley Road at 2:45 a.m., Ross Valley Fire Department spokeswoman JoAnne Lewis said. Because of dry conditions in the area, a second alarm was called but soon canceled, Lewis said.

The house was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived but an occupant of the home managed to escape safely, Lewis said.

The fire was controlled at 3:48 a.m. Firefighters from Ross and Ross Valley were at the scene and the Marin County, San Rafael and Kentfield fire departments assisted, Lewis said.

Crews from Pacific Gas & Electric Co. were called because of a gas leak and downed power line, Lewis said.
