A team of scientists from Stanford, UC Davis and other organizations tagged 179 great whites between 2000 and 2008 and tracked their migration patterns. At least five of the sharks swam into the bay in 2007 and 2008.

Scientists do not know what their final destination was, but they do not think the animals stayed very long.

The study is published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society, a British Scientific Journal.
