Research done by the Pew Center and the University of Pennsylvania shows it is just the opposite.

The report says Americans who use social websites like /*Facebook*/ and /*Twitter*/, cell phones, text messaging and photo sharing sites have a larger, more diverse group of close confidants than those who do not.

Internet users are also more likely to hang out in public places like coffee shops or parks instead of holing up at home.
