How to get a dancer's body

Simple conditioning exercises:

  • Plies - simple bends from the knee with feet spread apart. Works the glutes, inner and outher thighs.
  • Pilates moves - tones and strengthens body.
  • Crunches - works abdominals and obliques.

San Francisco Ballet's Nutcracker, set in early twentieth-century San Francisco, features choreography by Helgi Tomasson, scenic design by Tony Award winner Michael Yeargan, costume design by Tony Award winner Martin Pakledinaz, lighting design by James F. Ingalls, and projection design by Wendall K. Harrington.

The Los Angeles Times calls San Francisco Ballet's Nutcracker "the jewel in San Francisco's holiday entertainment crown" and the San Francisco Chronicle proclaimed it "one of the best 'Nutcrackers' in the country."

About Pauli Magierek:

Born in Chicago, Magierek studied at the Ruth Page Foundation School of Dance, Chicago Academy for the Arts, Royal Ballet School, and Houston Ballet Academy. She was appointed apprentice in 1997, joined the Company as a member of the corps de ballet the following year, and was promoted to soloist in 2008.

She has performed featured roles in a variety of classical works including Lead Czardas in Tomasson's Swan Lake, Bathilde in Tomasson's Giselle, Rosaline in Tomasson's Romeo & Juliet, White Cat in Tomasson's The Sleeping Beauty, Mirliton and Arabian in Tomasson's Nutcracker, and Gypsy Queen in Tomasson/Possokhov's Don Quixote.

Magierek has danced lead roles in Christensen's Filling Station; MacMillan's Elite Syncopations; van Manen's Grosse Fuge; de Mille's Rodeo; Robbins' Fancy Free and West Side Story Suite; and Taylor's Changes, Company B, and Spring Rounds. In addition, she created roles in Elo's Double Evil, Jenkins' Thread, and Robson's The Energy Between Us.

About Garen Price Scribner: Born in Arlington, Virginia, Garen Price Scribner trained at the North Carolina School of the Arts, Maryland Youth Ballet, San Francisco Ballet School, and Boston Ballet School. He was named an apprentice in 2003, joined the Company as a member of the corps de ballet a year later, and was promoted to soloist in 2008.

Scribner's diverse repertory includes featured roles in Tomasson's Nutcracker, Giselle, Romeo & Juliet, The Sleeping Beauty, and Swan Lake; Tomasson/Possokhov's Don Quixote; and Morris' Sylvia. Scribner has danced lead roles in Adam's A rose by any other name, Caniparoli's Ibsen's House, Christensen's Filling Station, Elo's Double Evil, Lubovitch's Elemental Brubeck, McGregor's Eden/Eden, Morris' Joyride and A Garden, Possokhov's Fusion, Ratmansky's Russians Seasons, Robbins' West Side Story Suite, Tudor's Jardin aux Lilas, and Wheeldon's Within the Golden Hour.
