San Jose ocularist helps girl from Middle East

SAN JOSE, CA

Mariam El Shafei lost her left eye last January. The 15-year-old was eating breakfast when a tank shell slammed into her home and metal fragments tore into her face.

"She feels different than everybody else because she doesn't have her eye. Speaking from getting to know her, she has a lot of emotion, not only physical wounds," says Nuha Shuman, a member of the host family.

On Thursday, the teen received a prosthetic eye, created and donated by San Jose Ocularist Raymond Rendon. She was so happy to receive the gift.
