The victims, a 30-year-old man and a woman, were taken into surgery early this morning at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, Richmond police Lt. Johan Simon said.
The shooting was reported at 11:57 p.m. Sunday in the 100 block of MacDonald Avenue, according to police.
The man and woman were sitting in a car when a dark-colored sedan apparently drove up beside them and someone began shooting into the victims' vehicle, Simon said.
A suspect fired into the victims' car, paused, and began shooting again before driving away. Simon said about eight shots were fired.
The victims' vehicle then rolled into a parked car.
Closed-circuit television cameras in the area captured footage of the incident, according to Simon.
The male victim was sitting in the driver's seat and was later listed in serious condition, according to police.
The female, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, was listed in critical condition.
No arrests have been made in the case, Simon said, and no witnesses besides the victims have been identified.
Simon said it's too early to determine if the shooting was gang-related.
The incident occurred at one of several "hot spots" in Richmond where closed-circuit surveillance cameras have been installed, according to Simon.
