A study on the herbal supplement ginkgo biloba shows it does not slow mental decline in people with Alzheimer's disease and dementia.

Ginkgo biloba is among the best-selling herbal supplements in the United States. It has been touted as an aid to improve memory and prevent mental decline due to aging.

But a seven year study shows the extract has no effect on memory loss and cognitive decline in older adults.

The report is published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
