Over 1,700 arrests made during anti-dui campaign

The regional Avoid campaign, which involves 125 Bay Area law enforcement agencies, has netted 1,766 arrests through 6 a.m. today, according to officials.

The increased enforcement efforts began Dec. 18 and will continue through Sunday.

The CHP was looking out for drunk drivers on Bay Area highways during New Year's Eve, and arrested 92 drivers for DUI in the region between 6 p.m. Thursday and 6 a.m. today. That number was up slightly from last year's total of 84 during the same 12-hour period.

CHP officers arrested 527 people statewide for DUI during the New Year's Eve period, up from 438 in 2008.

There have been two deaths in the Bay Area attributed to impaired drivers during the holiday enforcement period, according to officials.
