Talking to your teens about dating

Talking to Your Teens About Dating

  1. Talk to them about the purpose of dating: getting to know the opposite sex and how they think and act-not looking for a mate for life.

  2. Be willing to share some of your stories about the worst date or getting your heart broken so they know you understand and they can see you as a teenager not just as a parent.

  3. Acknowledge that the dating world has changed since you were a teen. More teen are group dating. Talk about the impact of peer pressure in a group and making good decisions.

  4. Tell your teenager that it is okay to change your mind about the person you are dating when you learn more about them and be willing to stop dating them.

  5. Discuss the problems with teen violence and let your teen know that it is never okay for someone to control or hit them or for them to do that to others.

  6. Take opportunities while watching television shows that present teen dating experiences to discuss dating with your own teenager.

  7. Let them know that you are always there to talk. Always remain calm when your teenager opens up and shares. Do not over react. If you over-react, they will stop coming to you.
