Cops continue cultural sensitivity training

EAST PALO ALTO, CA

This week's training series, the second since the program began last October, will focus on the African-American community within East Palo Alto, police Capt. Carl Estelle said.

Mayor David Woods will lead a panel of African-American community leaders who will speak about their culture within East Palo Alto. Police will also be provided with a "soul food" lunch along with a lesson about its significance.

The Police Department's first training session focused on Hispanic culture, Estelle said.

This week's training sessions are taking place at 10 a.m. today and Thursday at the East Palo Alto Parole Reentry Substation at 219 Demeter St.

The next "Cultural Competency" training event will be held in April and will focus on the Pacific Islander community.
