7th Richmond gang rape suspect turns himself in

RICHMOND, CA

John Crane Jr., 43, surrendered at the Richmond Police Department at about 7:30 p.m. tonight and was booked on felony sexual assault charges in connection with the Oct. 24 attack, Sgt. Bisa French said. Police announced last week that Crane is a suspect in the case.

During the attack, as many as 10 people beat and raped a 16-year-old girl for more than two hours while others watched, according to police.

Lt. Mark Gagan said last week that Crane has a criminal record but declined to elaborate or discuss evidence connecting him to the rape at Richmond High School.

Gagan acknowledged Crane is more than twice as old as most of the suspects, which creates a "unique dynamic." He said police do not believe Crane had any association with the victim prior to the attack.

Six other suspects have been arrested and charged in the case.
