Residents allowed back after gas leak, main break

WALNUT CREEK, CA

An East Bay Municipal Utility District crew smelled natural gas while repairing a broken water main along Springbrook Road. That prompted firefighters to evacuate at least eight people from their homes.

Monday morning's water leak was just a few feet away from where the same pipe ruptured on Sunday.

An EBMUD official pointed out that water pressure can damage other pipes nearby, including gas mains.

"Our first priority is to make repairs to the system and then we'll investigate what led to the leak," Blair Jones with PG&E said.

EBMUD has finished fixing the water main, but PG&E crews continue to work on patching the gas leak and restoring gas service.
