Spencer's Wine Tour: Boyd Family Vineyard

Wines featured in this segment:

2006 Big Ranch Cuvee, $28
This proprietary blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Syrah is soft, juicy and ready to enjoy. Made with the assumption that the sum is greater than its parts, the varieties were blended to make a big, structured wine that is also soft and well rounded. Immensely rich and complex in character, this Cuvée offers aromas of cassis and blueberry leading to sweet ripe flavors that are long and well integrated. The blend of this wine is 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Syrah all aged for 22 months in French oak barrels.

While this wine shows wonderfully now, it will continue to age gracefully over the next 1-3 years.

The wine is a perfect complement to grilled spring lamb, beef or Italian foods.

Abundant black fruit, cocoa, mocha, cassis, and smoke notes emerge from this deep, full-bodied, lush, heady, sexy wine.

2006 Big Ranch Vineyard Merlot, $34
The 2006 Estate grown and produced Merlot was harvested mid October from the "A4" Block of our home Big Ranch Vineyard®. The grapes were harvested at 28.6° brix and cold soaked at 50 degrees for 6 days to maximize extraction of color and flavor concentration. At the conclusion of primary fermentation, the wine was pressed into French oak barrels, 75% new and 25% once used. After 20 months of aging in 70% new Nadalie and Taransaud barrels, the Merlot was blended with 10% Napa Cabernet Sauvignon and bottled July 9th, 2008. The wine is a big, rich Merlot that has a lot of power. This blend accentuates the black fruit of Merlot with vanilla overtones that expresses the deep rich flavors of our vineyard.

Drink it now or hold it for 3 to 7 years.

Offers herbal berry fruit intermixed with notions of sweet and sour cherries, underbrush and spice box.

2006 Cabernet Sauvignon, $45
The 2006 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend from two very prestigious AVA districts in the Napa Valley, 75% Oakville and 25% Oak Knoll District. This produces a multi-layered wine with depth of character and bright fruit. Harvested October 30th and November 4th, the grapes were fermented to a high temperature of 89 degrees for full color and flavor extraction. Aged in 70% new, 30% once used French oak for 22 months then blended with 10% Big Ranch Vineyard Merlot for balance and harmony.

This lush Cabernet shows well now but will continue to mature over the next 3-5 years. Enjoy it with your favorite steak, roast or slow cooked stew.

Named as "One of the top 100 Cabs in the Napa Valley" 1/23/10 placing 18th in the competition.
