SamTrans fares will increase Monday to help the agency close a $28.4 million budget shortfall for the current fiscal year.

As part of the fare increases, the adult local fare will rise 25 cents to $2, the express cash one-way fare will increase 50 cents to $5 and the express pass fare will be raised proportionally, spokeswoman Christine Dunn said.

In addition, eligible discount cash fares will increase 25 cents to $1 and youth fares will rise 25 cents to $1.25.

Other fares will increase beginning July 1, including the Paratransit and Lifeline fares. The Paratransit fare will rise 50 cents to $3.50 and the Lifeline will increase 25 cents to $1.75. Fares for agency-sponsored trips will also be increased July 1, Dunn said.

The last fare increase was February 2009, according to Dunn.
