Girl reports kidnap attempt near middle school

CONCORD, CA

The 13-year-old girl told school officials Monday afternoon that she had been waiting to be picked up from an after-school program at the middle school shortly after 6 p.m.

She said she was standing on Weaver Lane near the school when an older-model white van approached her and stopped in the middle of the street, Lardieri said.

The driver, a Hispanic man in his 30s, called the girl over to the van and engaged her in conversation, the girl told police. He then grabbed her arm from inside the van, Lardieri said.

The girl said she then ran back toward the school. As she was running, a second man, described only as a Hispanic man about 25 years old, got out of the van and started to chase her but then stopped, police said.

The girl arrived back at the school and called for a ride.

There was a third man in the van as well, but the girl was unable to describe him, police said.

The girl told police that she had been unsure about reporting the incident when it first happened and only reported it to school officials Monday.

In the Thursday kidnapping, Walnut Creek police contacted Concord police at around 11:30 a.m. to report they had a teenage girl with them who said she had been kidnapped in Concord on her way to school.

The 14-year-old girl told police she was walking on David Avenue on her way to Oak Grove Middle School when two men in a black sport utility vehicle pulled up alongside her. One of the men got out of the vehicle and pulled her inside, police said.

The girl said she was driven around the area and eventually dropped off in downtown Walnut Creek, where she went into a business and called police. She was not injured.

Lardieri said police are looking into the possibility that the two incidents could be connected, but noted that the vehicle descriptions were very different.

As of this morning, police were still investigating both cases, but no suspects had been identified or arrested, Lardieri said.

Anyone with information about either case is asked to contact Concord police at (925) 671-3333, the police department's tip line at (925) 603-5836 or Bay Area Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
