Police arrest driver in collision that killed cyclist

LOS GATOS, CA

San Jose resident Kevin Derr, 50, faces charges of vehicular manslaughter, Los Gatos-Monte Sereno police said.

Derr has been admitted to the custody ward of Valley Medical Center, where he being treated for injuries he suffered in the Monday morning crash.

Police received a call at about 8:50 a.m. reporting a crash involving an SUV and a bicyclist at the intersection of Lark Avenue and Garden Hill Drive.

The bicyclist, 28-year-old Los Gatos resident Joshua West, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police determined that the SUV, a 1990 Chevrolet Blazer, was driving east in the right turn lane when it left the roadway, drove onto the sidewalk and struck West on his bicycle.

The SUV continued east through the intersection, struck the base of a traffic light and rolled onto its side, police said.
