Concord flies flags at half-staff for fallen soldier

CONCORD, CA

U.S. Army Pfc. Scott G. Barnett died in combat Thursday, according to the Department of Defense. He was assigned to the 412th Aviation Support Battalion, 12 Combat Aviation Brigade.

Barnett attended Oak Grove Middle School, Concord and Olympic high schools, and was an Eagle Scout.

He is survived by his wife Nikki, his mother Lori Barnett, his father Garland Barnett and his sister Bekkie Barnett, city officials said.

A viewing is scheduled Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Ouimet Brothers Concord Funeral Chapel at 4125 Clayton Road. A funeral will be held Monday at St. Bonaventure Church.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger released a statement on Barnett's death Tuesday.

"Maria and I were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Private First Class Scott Barnett," Schwarzenegger said. "Scott was a brave soldier who dedicated his life to protecting his fellow citizens. He served our nation proudly and on behalf of all Californians, we honor his sacrifice."
