Power outage hits Bay Bridge, South of Market Area

SAN FRANCISCO

PG&E said a faulty cable in an underground vault at Harrison and 2nd Streets shorted out at about 6 p.m. Sunday.

About 1,300 South of Market customers were left in the dark. But even more dangerous, the Bay Bridge was without any lighting at all. That created a hazard for drivers crossing the bridge as well as shipping traffic on the bay.

San Francisco and Oakland International Airports had to alert pilots that the bridge towers were without their red beacons. No accidents were reported.
