Bay Area engineer sends team to Chile

"If the same event happened here in California, we're going to lose several thousands of people. That's true in the Bay Area, that's true in L.A., and that's why it's so important to make the essential buildings like hospitals, schools, some governmental buildings, or jails, to make them better by a building code," said Kit Miyamoto.

East Bay structural engineer Miyamoto is sending a team to Chile Wednesday, in hopes of learning lessons from the disaster.

He points out that building codes in that country are similar to California's. Miyamoto warns a large quake would be even worse here because our population is much more dense.
