Police received a call at about 9:40 p.m. reporting that a vehicle had just struck a pedestrian on Kirker Pass Road at Olive Drive.
The pedestrian sustained major injuries to his head and lower abdomen. He was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where he was pronounced dead, Carroll said.
As they were investigating the incident, police learned that the pedestrian had walked to the No. 3 lane of traffic on southbound Kirker Pass Road and lay down. A moment later, a vehicle drove over him.
The driver stopped a short distance away in a parking lot and waited for police to arrive.
The case is still under investigation. The pedestrian's name was not being released this afternoon because his family hadn't yet been notified of his death, a Contra Costa County deputy coroner said.
