Two suspects arrested for double homicide in Oakland

OAKLAND, CA

According to Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason, Officer Michael Osanna was on routine patrol when gunshots were reported in the 1000 block of 30th Street in Oakland about 2:35 p.m. Friday.

As Osanna was investigating the gunshots he saw a vehicle fleeing from the area at a high rate of speed, Thomason said.

Citizens were able to alert Osanna to the vehicle and the officer subsequently detained the two occupants of the vehicle at the intersection of 26th and Linden streets, according to Thomason.

The two victims who died from gunshot wounds have been identified as 29-year-old Victor Johns and 56-year-old John Jones, both of Oakland.

Thomason said Johns was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel and Jones was later pronounced dead by hospital staff.

According to Thomason, patrol division officers at the scene of the shooting coordinated follow-up investigative steps that led to the identification of the two suspects who are believed to be responsible for the shooting. Thomason identified them as 26-year-old Deshawn Reed and 25-year-old Jason Watts, both of Oakland.

Thomason said investigators will present the case to the Alameda County District Attorney's office on Monday to file charges against Reed and Watts.

Oakland police say anyone with information about the shooting should call the homicide division at (510) 238-3821.
