CA asks for federal money for NUMMI workers

SAN FRANCISCO

When the assembly line closes at the end of the month, some 4,700 employees will lose their jobs, as will tens of thousands of workers at companies that supply NUMMI with parts.

The state is asking Washington for $33 million for job training, career and stress counseling and unemployment benefits.

"NUMMI is 65 percent of California's auto manufacturing industry, so that's why this event of them closing down warrants this national emergency grant funds," California Labor and Workforce Agency spokesperson Jeff Wyly said.
