Contra Costa cities chip in for open space

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA

The Walnut Creek City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to spend $390,000 to help purchase the $1.3 million property. Additional funding has been approved by the city of Lafayette, where the hilltop lies, the East Bay Regional Park District and the Muir Heritage Land Trust.

Most of the money is coming from a bond measure voters approved in 2008.

Officials say Acalanes Ridge, also known as Sunshine Hill, can be seen from 12 cities and adjoins thousands of acres of land that have already been reserved as open space.

The purchase is expected to be completed later this year. The land trust then plans to build trails, remove fire hazards and install signs welcoming visitors.
