Teams agree to use wooden bats

Marin Catholic High School and the Branson School used wood bats in their baseball game Friday afternoon. Both schools agreed to make a switch voluntarily for safety reasons.

Like most high schools and colleges, they have been using aluminum bats for years, because metal bats hit balls faster and farther, and are cheaper in the long run because they rarely break.

But Marin Catholic switched to wood bats after pitcher Gunnar Sandberg had his skull fractured when he was hit in the head by a baseball that came off an aluminum bat last week at an estimated 100 miles an hour.

Sandberg remains in a medically induced coma to reduce swelling in his brain but he is in stable condition.
