Salmon season for recreational fishermen opens

The salmon season for ocean waters south of Horse Mountain in Humboldt County to the U.S.-Mexico border will be open today through April 30, for recreational fishermen only.

Limitations and restrictions vary depending on salmon species. For example, Chinook salmon must meet the size limit for the zone where they are caught, and coho salmon must be released unharmed no matter what size.

For maps and regional sport fishing regulations go to www.dfg.ca.gov/marine/pdfs/salmonsport10.pdf.

General regulations limit fishermen to catching two salmon per day, with a minimum size limit of 20 inches in length.

Commercial fishing is not permitted this season.
