Golden Gate Bridge considering tolls for carpools

The Golden Gate Bridge District is proposing a toll for carpool drivers.

Right now, it is the only major toll road in the country that does not have one or plans for one. A carpool toll at the Bay Bridge goes into effect in July.

Golden Gate Bridge officials are proposing a toll of half that of the non-carpool vehicles -- right now that would be $3per car.

The bridge district faces a $132 million budget shortfall, in part because the recession has led to reduced traffic and fewer transit passengers.
