Police in Newark are investigating two attacks on teenage girls that happened in the same day.

A16-year-old girl says she was approached from behind and sexually assaulted late last night along Birch Street.

She broke free and her attacker escaped into nearby Birch Grove Park.

The attacker is described as a Hispanic man, in his late 20's or early 30's, with a thick mustache and slicked back hair. He was wearing a blue jacket or sweatshirt, with a soccer ball design on the sleeve.

That attack was two miles from where a 15-year-old Newark girl said a man tried to snatch her right off the street on the way to school Wednesday morning. That incident happened along Edgewater Drive.

That teen also managed to escape. The would-be kidnapper ran off after firing shots at a Good Samaritan who tried to help the girl.

Police have released a preliminary sketch of the man

Right now, investigators believe two different men are responsible for these two crimes.
