Rep. Miller pushes bill to save school jobs

SAN FRANCISCO

East Bay Democrat George Miller supports the measure that would give local governments $75 billion to save 750,000 jobs.

Nearly one-third of the money would go to prevent tens-of-thousands of layoffs in schools.

"The layoff of teachers is not a partisan issue; it happens in Republican districts, it happens in Democratic districts, it happens to Republican children, it happens to Democratic children," Miller said.

Miller estimates that California schools would get more than $2 billion if his bill passes.

The plan also includes money to re-hire police officers and firefighters who have been laid off.
