Richmond sinkhole repairs could cost $7.5 million

Officials now say it could cost the city of Richmond as much as $7.5 million to fix a giant sinkhole before the city can fully reopen a main road.

A big chunk of Via Verdi near El Portal drive caved in April 15, leaving behind a sinkhole 40 feet wide, 120 feet long and 30 feet deep.

At least one car fell into the giant hole when an underground storm culvert washed out, but no one was injured.

It could be the end of the year before repairs are made and city officials do not know where the money to fix it will come from.
