One of the intruders, identified by police today as 15-year-old Oakland resident Kelow Colston, was killed in the confrontation and a second intruder, a 17-year-old boy, has been arrested, Antioch police Lt. Leonard Orman said.
Police received a 911 call at 4:37 a.m. from a resident of 1301 Aster Drive who said three males were breaking into his house. A short time later, the resident told police he had shot one of the intruders.
Officers responded and found Colston dead inside the home and the resident detaining the 17-year-old.
The latter teen was arrested on suspicion murder, since he was allegedly involved in the commission of a felony that resulted in a death, Orman said.
Police are still trying to determine whether a third suspect was involved and sort out the chain of events that led to the shootings.
"This all occurred in a dark house in the early morning hours while people were sleeping," Orman said. "We're working our way through forensic evidence...and have a lot of statements from people."
The resident and his significant other, a woman in her late 20s, both suffered gunshot wounds and were airlifted to John Muir Medical Center.
Two children, a 2-year-old boy and a 10-month-old girl, were inside the home at the time of the shootings but were uninjured, police said.
Marijuana was being grown inside the house, which is believed to be the reason the home was targeted, police said. Orman said police are looking into whether criminal charges will be filed against the residents.
