Suspect arrested after violent beating in Haight

SAN FRANCISCO

Shortly before 2:30 a.m., 42-year-old William Valentine, of San Francisco, attempted to run over the victim while driving a vehicle in the area of Webster and Waller streets, Lt. Lyn Tomioka said.

Valentine then crashed the car into a pole, exited the vehicle, and beat the victim on the head and body with a bat, she said.

Tomioka said that police are not releasing the name of the victim at this time, but she said it appears that Valentine and the victim knew each other before the incident occurred.

The reason for the attack has not yet been determined, but this was definitely not a case of domestic violence, Tomioka said. Valentine was booked on charges of attempted murder, mayhem, and assault with a deadly weapon.

As of this afternoon, Tomioka said, the victim is still in intensive care at San Francisco General Hospital.
