Fremont school board to meet on book controversy

FREMONT, CA

It will consider whether to allow a Washington High School teacher to assign a book to students that tells the story of a girl whose stepfather beat and raped her.

The board rejected Dorothy Allison's "Bastard out of Carolina" last year.

The Washington teacher who wants to use it argues that some of the local high schools carry the book, and she would teach it in a way that promotes discussion and enlightenment.

The board meets at Fremont City Hall Wednesday night at 6:30.
