The California Field Poll shows 51 percent are in favor of allowing gay couples to get married, while 42 percent are opposed.
That's about the same as two years ago just before Proposition 8, the ban on gay marriage, was passed.
Support for same-sex marriage falls to just 44 percent when people were given the option to choose, civil unions only 34 percent favor that and 19 percent said neither.
A federal appeals court is expected to rule on the constitutionality of Proposition 8 any day now.
