Gunshots were detected by the city's ShotSpotter system at 1:18 a.m. in the 5900 block of Hayes Avenue, police spokesman Officer Jeff Thomason said.
Officers responded but didn't find any victims. But police then received a report of a person on the ground in front of 5917 Harmon Ave.
The person, later identified as 18-year-old Jonathan Lee Scott, of Oakland, had been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The motive for the killing remains unclear and police do not yet have any suspects in custody.
