Oakland school promotes peace through art

OAKLAND, CA

Students of Lakeview elementary in Oakland attended a summer program to stimulate their brains and their hearts.

Because of the recent outbreaks of violence, Lakeview Elementary thought it would be a good idea for students to reflect on the need for peace.

"As a teacher you hear some stories that are just unimaginable that if I had to deal with as a child I don't know what kinds of person I would have grown up to be," teacher Lillie Hayes-Staples said.

They were asked to imagine what peace would look like in their communities.

One expressed the sadness of a broken heart due to violence. Some said they knew how they would end the violence in Oakland.

A few of these students recently arrived from African countries. Yemema Wondimu is Ethiopian and to her peace means living in America.

First prize went to Tziom McElroy who added a few words to his art work.

"When you find peace within yourself you become the kind of person who can live with others," he said.

Those are words to live by.
