5-acre grass fire outside Vacaville

VACAVILLE, CA

At 10:28 a.m., Cal Fire dispatched a helicopter, three fire engines, a bulldozer and a fire crew under the direction of a battalion chief, Cal Fire Capt. Tom Knecht said.

Crews from the Vacaville Fire District, Winters Fire Department and the California Medical Facility also responded to the fire that spread near 8593 Holmes Lane, he said.

The fire was contained at 11:05 a.m. after crews lined the perimeter with fuel breaks, Knecht said.

The fire broke out after a controlled burn - common practice in summer months to hedge dry, flammable vegetation - got out of hand.

"The responsible party had all the permits in place and made all the appropriate notifications and it got away from them," Knecht said.
