Oakland police have identified a man who was fatally shot in East Oakland Friday morning as 45-year-old Montago Bey Joshua, a popular local tattoo artist.

At about 11:30 a.m. Friday, officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 10000 block of MacArthur Boulevard, where they found Joshua suffering from gunshot wounds on the sidewalk, police Officer Jeff Thomason said.

Joshua, a Hayward resident, was transported by ambulance to Highland Hospital where he died at 12:09 p.m., according to the Alameda County coroner's bureau.

Joshua apparently was in the area to visit friends. A gunman approached him, opened fire and then fled, Thomason said.

Investigators are trying to establish a motive for the shooting. No arrests have been made.

The shooting is the 52nd homicide in Oakland in 2010.

Anyone with information about Joshua's killing is encouraged to call the Police Department's homicide section at (510) 238-3821.
