Teens exploit self-checkout stands to buy liquor

SAN FRANCISCO

With no one there to check their ID, some teenagers are using do-it-yourself checkouts to purchase alcohol.

The machines are supposed to lock up when alcohol goes through until a clerk can check the customer's age.

However, lawmakers said today machines are loosely controlled. Some don't work. .

Also teens find ways to foil them, like putting beer bottles in a six-pack of coke.

The state legislature is now considering a bill that would require stores to only sell alcohol through a cashier.
