Firefighters struggle to contain pier fire

ALAMEDA, CA

The Alameda Fire Department responded to a call at 4:30 a.m. that Encinal Terminals at the corner of Buena Vista Avenue and Sherman Street was burning, Deputy Fire Chief Michael Fisher said.

The 18 Alameda firefighters who initially responded could not reach the fire from the top of the pier, so the San Francisco Fire Department provided a fireboat at about 5:10 a.m., Fisher said.

The fireboat, three engines, and two trucks controlled the fire at about 5:30 a.m., he said.

Firefighters and excavators were pulling off the top pieces of the pier today to ensure there were not hot spots underneath on the supporting beams, Fisher said.

There were no injuries, but two ambulances were sent to the scene, he said. The cause of the fire remained unknown, but Fisher said there was some electrical equipment under the unused pier.
