Nation's first Muslim university opens in Berkeley

BERKELEY, CA

Classes begin at Zaytuna College with just 15 students. The four year liberal arts college is hoping to enroll 2,000 students a decade from now.

There was convocation for the students Monday night.

Zaytuna College is offering degrees in Islamic law, theology and Arabic languages. Although all the inaugural students are Muslim, the college is open to students of any religion.

It's seeking accreditation from the same organization that licenses schools such as UC Berkeley and St. Mary's college.
