Fire nearly causes evacuation of women's jail

REDWOOD CITY, CA

At about 4:15 p.m., firefighters responded to a report of a trash fire on a plot of land at the Docktown Marina, which borders a portion of the jail property, located in the 1500 block of Maple Street, Redwood City fire Battalion Chief Steve Cavallero said.

A small wooden shed and some scrap lumber caught fire and threatened to spread to a fence bordering the jail, Cavallero said.

Sheriff's deputies considered evacuating the facility due to the threat of fire and smoke, but the threat was quickly mitigated by firefighters and the blaze was controlled in about 10 minutes.

There was no cost associated with the property that burned, as it was mostly discarded material, Cavallero said.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
