An East Bay charity that provides free summer camp for children with life threatening illnesses, raised an astonishing amount of money this weekend, in a down economy.

More than 1,000 people turned out, including 49er great Steve Young and his daughter, to help the Taylor Family Foundation at Camp Arroyo in Livermore.

More than $1 million was raised. That's enough to keep camp going for the next two years.

The founders, Elaine and Barry Taylor, have helped 40,000 children over 20 years of providing camp.
